Back pain that sometimes sends a line of symptoms down into the leg, and that can sharpen when you bend forward, sit for a while, or even cough or sneeze. A known or suspected disc problem often shows up with exactly that mix.

What it is

A disc bulge or herniation almost never sits alone, the muscles around it guard, spasm, and compensate, and that muscular layer can compound the pain considerably. PNMT does not and cannot treat the disc itself; what it can address is that surrounding muscular component.

What makes it worse

It commonly worsens with prolonged sitting, forward bending or lifting, coughing or sneezing, and long static postures that keep the spine loaded in one position. The aggravating positions are often consistent enough to be a clue in themselves.

How PNMT helps

Your therapist takes a careful history and assesses to separate disc-driven symptoms from the muscular guarding layered on top. Where muscle is involved, the work is gentle, precise, and kept within safe limits on the guarding and compensating muscles, guided by your feedback. This is explicitly coordinated with your medical providers, and your therapist will refer you for imaging or evaluation when the picture warrants, if the symptoms are not muscular, that is said plainly.

What to expect & how long

Expect a conservative, communication-led approach that stays in close contact with your other care. If you develop progressive weakness, spreading numbness, or any change in bladder or bowel control, treat that as urgent medical care, not a session to book. When muscle is a contributor, change is gradual and tracked honestly over a course of several sessions.

I've been going to soma vida for around 4-5 years. I think at this point for neuromuscular therapy. My coworker recommended it for my back pain. I mostly make appts with Yu, but I think I've had appts with everyone there atleast once. The treatment can be painful but I always come out feeling so light and so much better than before. I've had chronic neck pain from my desk job and other pain in areas that is only fixed by whatever they do here. They truly care about you and want to make sure you leave feeling better.

I've been going to Somavida for years because they are the only place I've found with the right combination of expertise and ability to eliminate pain when I have muscle pulls or strains, and help me stay “tuned up” to avoid future injuries.
