Shin Splints

Legs & Feet Restorative Skills

An ache or tenderness runs along your shinbone, building the longer you run and quieting with rest, for a while it stays manageable, until it stops easing up.

What it is

Shin splints are usually an overload story: the tibialis anterior at the front of the lower leg and the calf muscles, along with where they attach to the bone, take on more repeated load than they are conditioned for and start to ache.

What makes it worse

It tends to flare when running volume or intensity climbs quickly, when you train on hard surfaces, when shoes are worn down, or when the calves are tight and short on flexibility.

How PNMT helps

Your therapist works from your pain history, then assesses the lower-leg muscles, ankle range of motion, and how your foot moves to pin down which muscles are involved. Treatment is targeted, precise work on those muscles and their attachments, led by your feedback rather than force; if the cause does not appear muscular, your therapist will point you toward the appropriate evaluation. Once you are improving, Restorative Skills can give you self-treatment to help keep it from coming back.

What to expect & how long

Each visit, your therapist re-tests the lower leg and compares it to the last so the direction of change is clear. Real progress usually means easing off the runs that aggravate it while a short run of sessions does the muscular work (often a few visits rather than one) and Restorative Skills can give you self-treatment to keep it from creeping back. If shin pain is persistent, worsening, or pinpoints to one tender spot on the bone, get evaluated for a stress fracture first; that needs medical assessment, not a session.

What clients say

Sarah is amazing! She is both kind and great at helping to resolve chronic pain. My TMJ has improved so much with her care.

I've been going to soma vida for around 4-5 years. I think at this point for neuromuscular therapy. My coworker recommended it for my back pain. I mostly make appts with Yu, but I think I've had appts with everyone there atleast once. The treatment can be painful but I always come out feeling so light and so much better than before. I've had chronic neck pain from my desk job and other pain in areas that is only fixed by whatever they do here. They truly care about you and want to make sure you leave feeling better.

I've been going to Somavida for years because they are the only place I've found with the right combination of expertise and ability to eliminate pain when I have muscle pulls or strains, and help me stay “tuned up” to avoid future injuries. I spend most of my time working behind a desk and Somavida is a critical part of helping me stay healthy and out of injury from my strained neck and back. I personally work with Yu Suzuki and she is phenomenal. Truly a “pain detective” that has helped me find the root issue with muscle problems countless times. This is a place to come and heal and avoid future injury without medication or judgment. Can’t recommend Somavida enough!!!
